We will be joining up with Spire Detection Dogs to bring you and your dog an evening of Scentwork Activities each month.
Have you ever wondered how the amazing detection dogs of today begin to develop such skills in this area? We hope to provide you with some insight into how you can activate your own dogs’ sense of smell through reward based exercises.
Starting at the very beginning we will show you how to motivate your dog to search and indicate a find. This workshop aims to give you the knowledge to practice basic L1 scent work training at home using fun and stimulating games and activities.
Depending on the skill level of the dogs attending on the night we will also show you how to begin training a dog onto L1 scents
Scentwork is when a dog uses its sense of smell to identify and locate a scent which it has been trained to detect. It then needs to be able to indicate this find to the handler in the way it has been trained to. Scentwork is a natural behaviour for all dogs and is essential in hunting and finding prey. This behaviour has been put to many uses – for example in police work, search and rescue, and hunting.
These workshops are suitable for all dogs. Any breed, age and even dogs with injuries or disabilities can enjoy and benefit from scentwork training – scentwork is a non injurious sport.
As a training activity scentwork is fun, very rewarding and at the same time mentally simulating for your dog. It will improve the relationship between you and your dog and is a great confidence builder. You can participate whether it is just for fun or go on and enter trials and gain qualifications.
Scentwork UK is an organisation which aims to promote and develop scentwork as a dog sport and training activity throughout the country by providing trials and a network of trainers. Dogs are tested against a consistent national standard and can progress from beginners to advanced by passing the individual levels at a Scentwork UK trial. Progression through the trials helps participants to focus on their training and to achieve small steps with modern reward based training methods. UK trials are based on detection-style nose work practiced daily by customs & excise dogs, bomb explosive dogs, search & rescue dogs and medical detection dogs
